NPWP for Investing: Required or Not? Complete 2026 Guide
Is NPWP required for investing? Tax rate differences with/without NPWP, how to register online in 5 minutes.
Note: This article discusses Indonesian financial products and markets. The principles apply globally, though specific products, regulations, and tax treatments vary by country.
You’re ready to invest. You open the Bibit app, fill out the registration form. You reach the NPWP field — blank.
“Do I need to create an NPWP first? How long does it take? Is it complicated?”
You close the app. Your investment plans are delayed again.
This is what happens to thousands of potential investors every month. Yet, creating an NPWP (Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak — Tax Identification Number) only takes 5 minutes. And without an NPWP, you pay 2x the tax on stocks and dividends.
Let’s break it down one by one.
The Legal Rules: What Does the Law Say?
According to Undang-Undang Nomor 36 Tahun 2008 tentang Pajak Penghasilan (Law No. 36 of 2008 on Income Tax), every taxpayer who has income — including from investments — is required to have an NPWP.
Article 2 paragraph (1) states:
“Every taxpayer who has met subjective and objective requirements must register at the Directorate General of Taxes office.”
Objective requirements include: having income above PTKP (Penghasilan Tidak Kena Pajak — Non-Taxable Income threshold), which for 2026 is Rp 54 million per year.
Implications:
- If your income (salary + investments) is above Rp 54 million/year, NPWP is mandatory
- If below, technically not required — but many investment platforms still ask for NPWP
Tax Differences: With vs Without NPWP
This is the main reason why you should have an NPWP, even if not yet required:
1. Mutual Funds
Good news: Mutual funds in Indonesia are not subject to capital gains tax for individual investors.
- With NPWP: No tax
- Without NPWP: Still no tax
Conclusion: For mutual funds, NPWP doesn’t affect taxes. But some platforms (like Bareksa and IPOT) still require NPWP for registration.
2. Stocks (Transaction Tax)
Every time you sell stocks, there’s a 0.1% transaction tax on the sale value (PPh Final — Final Income Tax).
- With NPWP: 0.1% of sale value
- Without NPWP: 0.2% of sale value (2x higher!)
Example: Sell stocks worth Rp 10 million.
- With NPWP: Tax Rp 10,000
- Without NPWP: Tax Rp 20,000
The Rp 10,000 difference looks small, but if you actively trade or rebalance, this can add up to hundreds of thousands per year.
3. Stock Dividends
Dividends you receive from stocks are subject to 10% PPh Final (Final Income Tax).
- With NPWP: 10% of dividend
- Without NPWP: 20% of dividend (2x higher!)
Example: Receive dividend of Rp 5 million.
- With NPWP: Tax Rp 500,000 → receive Rp 4.5 million
- Without NPWP: Tax Rp 1 million → receive Rp 4 million
Difference of Rp 500,000! For long-term dividend investors, this is very significant.
4. SBN (Surat Berharga Negara — Government Securities) and Bonds
Interest/coupon from SBN and bonds is subject to PPh Final.
- With NPWP: 10% of coupon (for retail SBN)
- Without NPWP: 20% of coupon
Example: Invest Rp 10 million in SBR (Savings Bond Ritel — Retail Savings Bond) with 6.5% annual coupon.
- Annual coupon: Rp 650,000
- With NPWP: Tax Rp 65,000 → receive Rp 585,000
- Without NPWP: Tax Rp 130,000 → receive Rp 520,000
Difference of Rp 65,000 per year. In 5 years, you lose Rp 325,000 just for not having an NPWP.
Tax Summary Table
| Investment Type | With NPWP | Without NPWP | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mutual Funds (capital gain) | 0% | 0% | Same |
| Stocks (sale transaction) | 0.1% | 0.2% | 2x higher |
| Stock Dividends | 10% | 20% | 2x higher |
| SBN Interest | 10% | 20% | 2x higher |
| Deposit Interest | 20% | 20% | Same |

Is My Investment Reported to the Tax Office?
Answer: Yes, most of it is already automatic.
Since the implementation of AEoI (Automatic Exchange of Information) and OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan — Financial Services Authority) Regulations on Transaction Reporting, financial institutions are required to report investor data to DJP (Direktorat Jenderal Pajak — Directorate General of Taxes):
- Stock brokers: Report your transactions and dividends
- Investment Managers: Report NAB (Nilai Aktiva Bersih — Net Asset Value) of mutual funds (for values above certain thresholds)
- Banks (SBN): Report ownership and SBN interest
What does this mean? If you invest without an NPWP or don’t report investment income in your SPT (Surat Pemberitahuan Tahunan — Annual Tax Return), there’s a risk of discrepancy that could trigger a tax audit.

Consequences of Investing Without NPWP
Besides higher taxes, there are other risks:
1. Account Limited or Blocked
Some platforms (especially stock brokers) may limit your account if you don’t update your NPWP within a certain timeframe.
2. Difficulties with Large Withdrawals
Withdrawals above Rp 100 million (depending on the bank) may trigger a LTKM (Laporan Transaksi Keuangan Mencurigakan — Suspicious Financial Transaction Report). Without an NPWP, you’ll need to explain the source of funds — the process can take a long time.
3. Cannot Claim Tax Deductions
For certain investments (like DPLK — Dana Pensiun Lembaga Keuangan, Financial Institution Pension Fund, or pension funds), you can claim tax deductions in your SPT. But this can only be done if you have an NPWP.

4. Audit Risk in the Future
If at some point your income increases and you’re required to file SPT, DJP can see your investment history that wasn’t reported previously. This could become a problem.
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I’m a fresh graduate, salary Rp 5 million/month (Rp 60 million/year). Do I need an NPWP?
A: Yes, because your income is above PTKP (Rp 54 million). Plus, if you invest in stocks or SBN, you save 2x in taxes.
Q: I only invest in mutual funds. NPWP doesn’t matter, right?
A: Correct, mutual funds are not subject to capital gains tax. But many platforms (Bareksa, IPOT) require NPWP for registration. Plus, you might want to diversify into stocks/SBN later?
Q: Can NPWP be created under my spouse’s name?
A: No. NPWP must match the name on the KTP used for the investment account. If the account is in your name, NPWP must also be in your name.
Q: What if I’ve been investing without NPWP, then create a new NPWP?
A: Update your NPWP on the investment platform (usually in profile/account menu). Starting from the next transaction, you’ll automatically get the lower tax rate.
Conclusion: Create Your NPWP, Don’t Delay
Creating an NPWP is:
- Free (absolutely no cost)
- Fast (5 minutes to fill the form, 1-3 days to get NPWP)
- Saves money (50% lower tax on stocks, dividends, SBN)
- Avoids problems (compliance, platform access, tax audits)
There’s no reason to delay. Even if you’re not yet a required taxpayer (income below PTKP), having an NPWP gives you flexibility and cost efficiency.
